Benjamin Peter Hayek was born in Iowa City in 1977 and is a 1995 graduate of Iowa City High School.
He received a B.A. (philosophy) from the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts in 1999, and a J.D. from the University of Iowa College of Law in 2003. From 1999 until 2001, Ben was a PGA Apprentice Assistant Golf Professional where he worked, among others, for Troon Golf in Scottsdale, Arizona.
During law school, he served as a law clerk to United States Senator Charles E. Grassley in Washington, D.C., served as a judicial intern to United States District Court Judge Ronald E. Longstaff in Des Moines, and wrote for the Iowa Law Review. After receiving a M.A. (philosophy) from the University of Iowa Graduate College in 2004, Ben served as a judicial law clerk to Minnesota District Court Judge Michael R. Savre in Glencoe, Minnesota.
After his clerkship, Ben entered the private practice of law in downtown Minneapolis, where his practice focused almost exclusively upon insurance coverage and defense litigation. Ben returned to Iowa City in 2008, where his practice has focused primarily upon family and municipal law.
Ben's memberships include the Iowa State Bar Association (litigation and family law sections), the Johnson County Bar Association (Technology Committee Chair, 2010-present; President, 2011-present), the Iowa Municipal Attorneys Association, the Legal Writing Institute, the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy Studies (including service on the Iowa Lawyers Chapter Steering Committee), and the Dean Mason Ladd American Inn of Court (Barrister).
Ben's most recent publication is Morality, Professionalism, and Happiness, 8 Engage 1,135 (February 2007), and his most recent cases are Tinucci v. Allstate Ins. Co., 487 F.Supp.2d 1058 (D. Minn. 2007), Coyle v. Kujaczynski, 759 N.W.2d 637 (Iowa Ct. App. 2008), and Scott Medhaug v. Iowa District Court ex rel. Black Hawk County, 2010 WL 2602170 (Iowa Ct. App. 2010) (unpublished).
Ben has been admitted to practice before the following courts: State of Minnesota (2005); United States District Court for the District of Minnesota (2005); United States Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals (2005); State of Iowa (2008); United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa (2008); United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa (2008).
On July 18, 2011, Ben was commissioned as a First Lieutenant (O-2) in the Iowa Army National Guard JAG Corps.
Charles Peter Hayek was born in Iowa City in 1944 and is a 1962 graduate of University of Iowa High School. He received a B.A. (history) from Stanford University in 1966 and a J.D. from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1973.
From 1966 until 1970, Pete served in the Vietnam Conflict as navigator on U.S.S. Sproston (DD-577) and executive officer on U.S.S. Cree (ATF-84), followed by 27 years in the United States Navy Reserve, retiring at the rank of Captain (O-6) in 1997. After graduating from law school, Pete joined the Iowa City law firm founded in 1926 by his father, Will J. Hayek, where he practiced in until 2005 primarily in the areas of real estate, domestic relations, probate, and commercial transactions.
During this period of active practice Pete served as a judicial magistrate and as Johnson County Bar Association President. He was also an effective Domestic Relations Mediator.
Pete has been admitted to practice before the following courts: State of Iowa (1973); United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa (1980); United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa (1980); United States Tax Court (1973).
